Long Live the King
December 10, 2006

I am coming full circle. My circle is coming to an end. My son's, his is just beginning. Just a few years ago, I stood in a meadow and set a golden laureled wreath on another king's head. Now, I am kneeling with my forehead skimming that of another. This one, a high king.
Hail High King Iowerth Rhudd Draig. The Dragon has come...
Chosen emissaries, principle allies are all around us, and the passage of kingship flows from me to him through the fingers of a woman, one of the Fates themselves. Here, a golden age is being reborn. That one that we've all been waiting for is coming. And it will be my task to carry it with me as I head into the tangled brush of the mortal and material world. The real underworld. To those who have forgotten. To those who have never even dreamed that such peace, that such beauty, that such balance could exist.
Though my head is bowed, I look to my son. I find his eyes are already on me, those strange periwinkle eyes. I smile at him, and it takes everything in me not to scoop the new king in my arms and hold him till he chokes. In silence, I tell him I love him. In silence, I tell him I am proud of him. In my smile, I tell him I shall miss him but I trust him to do what must be done.
Soon my son will have a wife. Soon he will have sons of his own, and the line will be assured only this time it will stick. He is wise. He is compassionate. He is intelligent. He was the one they were waiting for. And my duty by him is done. I can stand back now, and I can watch him, and I can beam with pure joy.
     From afar...
As he steps into the light, it is right that I recede back into the shadows that first brought me to this place. I will walk the path that Mithras strode and restore what he had taken. Life for life. It is bigger than us all.
I know that god exists. I know that dreams are real. Without them, none of this would be here. I understood it when I saw this man as a baby, plump and red-cheeked in a floating crib. I saw his brother, his twin, my grandson beside him, even as he is now in his forever-treasured place. And I smiled and kissed them and knew.
Now, to the feast of kings...
Now, to the palazzi and atria...
     Now, to the future...
All hail King Iowerth Rhudd Draig...
     Long live the king...
     And, now, back to work...
